AVOIDING A BLOCKED DRAIN

In the majority of cases a blockage is due to a simple lack of common sense, so the following area couple of tips to help you avoid having to call an engineer to unblock the drain:-

Firstly, avoid tipping cooking fat drown the kitchen sink. 
Even if you think it is not very much, over time it will build up and can solidify to reduce the usable bore of the drainage pipe, ultimately causing a block. If you want to dispose of it easily, just find a small ball and tip any excess fat into it, place in the fridge until it solidifies and dispose of in your food waste bin, or main rubbish bin. Alternatively, you could mix in some bird seed before you place in the fridge and put out for the birds as a treat when solid.

Don’t flush material you shouldn’t
Toilets are not built to flush nappies and sanitary products, nor masses of tissue paper. Use your lavatory sensibly. If you have any ridges, or slight cracks in your sewer pipes this type of material gets snagged and builds up to cause a problem. Nappies particularly can block the downpipe, or stack pipe, causing overflowing toilets directly into your home. The rule is ‘Think before you flush’.

Don’t plant trees or shrubs close to drainage pipes
Sometimes it is obvious where a drain is located, so avoid any planting nearby. However, it isn’t always possible to know where drains are. Try looking in the sale documents for your property, often drains are shown in the registry documents, so you can work out where to avoid planting. Alternatively, you can pay to have a survey done which will produce a drainage map of your property.

Don’t try to fix it yourself
At the first signs of blockage contact a professional drainage engineer. If you try to fix it yourself, or leave a problem hoping it will go away, it inevitably gets worse and can add to cost of repairs if it does so. Don’t pour loads of chemicals down the drain in the hope of fixing it and certainly never mix chemicals. The temptation is to pour down one thing and if it doesn’t work , pour down another! You can end up corroding pipes, melting plastic pipes and at worse, create an explosive mixture. If there is a crack, chemicals can pollute the surrounding soil endangering plants and animals.
