DRAIN MAINTENANCE

Within your property it pays to minimise the flushing of fat down the kitchen sink. Regular flushing with detergent and HOT water can help minimise the risk of fat build-up. Where you do detect a small fat build-up you can use approved drain cleaners, but be careful, since mixing chemicals can cause reactions within the pipe, sometimes even melting the pipe. Most of these cleaners contain concentrated sodium hydroxide, which reacts with the fat in a process called ‘saponification’ (which is how soap is made), this makes the fat water soluble to wash away. However, this reaction does cause heat, which is why you have to be careful with it and how much you use.
