Root ingress into pipes and drains is a common cause of a blocked drain, and if not caught early, can lead to expensive repairs, resulting in a drain having to be replaced.
So, how do roots get into the drain?
When a plant’s roots start to grow, they are almost hair-like. This means they can grow into and take hold, in even the smallest joints or cracks. Roots are strong and before you know it, they have grown bigger, thicker and strong enough to push cracks and joints apart, eventually breaking the pipe. If they are smaller plant roots and don’t fracture the pipe, they can quickly grow into a root-ball and cause a blockage in the pipe. Take action. Roots need to be removed!

We can remove roots from your drainage system then offer a solution to stop roots from reoccurring.
Using spins jets and frail chains, we can remove roots ingress from the drainage system. Once roots are removed, we would install a patch repair to stop roots from growing back through.
In the worst cases, we would use a robotic cutter to remove the thick taproots found in the main sewers.
In all cases we would recommend the need to locate the offending plants and trees above ground, since additional measures may be necessary to prevent the root growing back (e.g. the cutting back of a tree root to at least four foot from the drainage system, or removal of a shrub).

It is always our priority to effect repairs wherever possible, using no-dig technology. This will usually simply involve a patch repair or relining a small section of pipe to restore and strengthen the pipe’s integrity. Yes, in a small number of cases there will be a need to dig down to the drain itself to effect a repair. If the property is a new-build this is so much easier, but let’s be honest, most of us buy or rent established properties with gardens that have already been planted. In the main, the key is to know your drainage system. You can find much of this information from the plans held by the local authority, which will certainly show main drainage, but not always the smaller drains within your property boundary. Once you know where the drains run, simply avoid planting trees or large shrubs close to the drains. If an established garden, survey those plants and trees in the vicinity of drains to see if any action is necessary. Maybe pare back the root system close to the drain.
